Music Purchases 07/2006
July 31, 2006
Music is a very key element in my life, and while I don't purchase nearly as much music as some of my friends, I do my best to keep up with what my ears desire. Nothing beats turning on a friend to a great piece of music, so I thought it would be fun to review my purchases every month and share a song to give you a taste. Shall we?
Bedouin Soundclash - Sounding a Mosaic
I was turned onto this Canadian reggae band when Jordan over at Pastepunk asked me to create an image to use for a feature on his site. The name struck me, so I had to see what this band was all about. Thanks to my new eMusic account, I'm much more willing to take a chance on an album. This album did not disappoint. This is some heartfelt, great reggae. If you're a fan of Steel Pulse or Bob Marley, this is worth checking out. Really, I think it's that good, not just good for a bunch of Canucks. Picking a song to post was tough. There's some slow stuff, some acoustic tracks, and then songs like my favorite, “Rude Boy Don't Cry”. How can the title of a song get any better than that? This one well get your feet movin.
Bedouin Soundclash - Rude Boy Don't Cry
The Briggs - Leaving the Ways
This EP was pretty much what I was expecting: sing-along, anthemic street punk. Good, not ground breaking, but fun to listen to nonetheless. I'd like to check out a full-length by these guys. I've heard they were once spotted at Sunset Bowl, so they must be alright. Some friends of mine really dig this band, but I've never heard more than a couple of songs prior to this. The song I selected reminds me of “Death or Glory” by the Clash.
The Ducky Boys - The War Back Home
I've been a fan of this Boston band for quite a while now, and that Mark Lind is one prolific s.o.b. This album is no Dark Days, but it's probably the most well produced out of all of their albums. Good, melodic, honest-to-pete punk rock. I didn't listen to their last effort as much as I should have, and I need to listen to this album a bit more before I nail down a favorite track, but so far this one stands out.
The Ducky Boys - Two Thieves and a Savior
The Enablers - To Thine Own Ruin Be True
I heard these guys for the first time when I downloaded the Suburban Home Records Free Sampler a couple of weeks back. Their MySpace page describes them the best, “The rough melancholy of Social Distortion, sometimes the hurt-angry singing of Mr Jawbreaker added by the "F*** You" attitude of the Beltones.”. I'd even throw in some Leatherface influence, but you get the idea. And if you don't, then go buy every Social D, Jawbreaker, and Beltones record in existence.
Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros - Global A Go-Go
First off, if you don't know who Joe Strummer is, then I feel sorry for you. If you do, then you probably know how amazing his posthumous record Streetcore is. I was always under the impression that the previous Mescaleros albums were World-Beat garbage, but I was so wrong. After seeing the new Dick Rude documentary Let's Rock Again, I was inspired to explore this album, Global A Go-Go. Such beautiful music, it's hard to describe. It transcends all sorts of boundaries. This song is the shortest.

You Know What?
This is exhausting. From now on, I'll only review the albums that really move me, and I think I have that covered for this month. Although I am also enjoying albums I picked up by the Kings of Nuthin', Love Me Destroyer, None More Black (EP), Sean Na Na (the Shins got loaded at a party and decided to play their songs faster), and last but not least, Guitar and Drum by Stiff Little Fingers. Here are the rest of the tunes for your listening pleasure. If you are a band or label and would like me to remove any of this content, just drop me a line.
Kings of Nuthin' - Only Time
Love Me Destroyer - Just What You Need
None More Black - Oh, There's Legwork
Sean Na-Na - Double Date
Stiff Little Fingers - Strummerville
