12 Miles!
May 16, 2007
Holy crap. I attempted my first real ride this evening and covered a lot more ground than I thought I would.
I did my research and picked out my route before leaving home so that I could stick to bike trails or residential streets that are less traveled by cars. My plan was pretty ambitious, and part of me knew there was a possibility that I wouldn't be able to make it and have Kim come and pick my sorry ass up. But I was pleasantly surprised with how much ground I covered: 12 miles!
I took some back streets down to the Delridge area so I could cut underneath the West Seattle Bridge and hop on the Alki Bike Trail. Surprisingly, that only took about 10-15 minutes and was either downhill or flat the entire way. Once I got to the trail, I covered a lot of ground, cruising along the waterfront and looping around to the Coastal / Pepperdock vicinity. I even had a rollerblader ask if he could drift me or some nonsense. When I finally stopped to snap a pic of the sunset and take a breather, he asked if I knew how fast we were going.
Around that time, I thought it'd be best to cut over to Admiral and start making my way back home. I had no idea if I'd be able to climb Admiral; it's a loooong, steep hill all the way up to California Ave. I did it though, without stopping. From there, I cruised down 41st to Alaska then jogged over to 42nd and took that all the way to Morgan. Nice and quiet street, and nearly all downhill. From there, I had to climb Morgan. I was pretty wiped at that point, and had to get off and walk half way up that stretch of hill. After it leveled out, I hopped back on and climbed 35th back home, nonstop. The entire trip took about an hour and a half.
If I'm not too immobilized on Friday, I think I may take a crack at Bike to Work Day. Work is only a 9 mile ride, and mostly flat, so it shouldn't be nearly as bad as I thought. Plus, I can get free Starbucks crap and water bottles along the way.
