When in Rome, Do the Jerk
July 23, 2007
What a strange weekend. The weather totally flipped a switch that made everything feel like we time warped to Fall, except the temps hovered around 70. Good for the plants I suppose, and therefore good for my water bill. But as Chris said, we don't sit through 9 months of crappy weather for this.
The flipside was that it caused us to venture out to the movies in who-knows-how-long. I'd nearly forgot how much fun it is to see a flick in a theater. Sure, the popcorn is never that great, and I'm not a big fan of soda, but it's generally better than a couch experience. Plus, you can always sneak in a vegan cookie bigger than your head and a drink of choice, which makes you feel like a loner, Dottie. A Rebel.
Caught two movies this weekend. The first was Paris, Je T'aime, which included previews for several other films I need to catch up on. 18 directors, 18 short stories that will entertain you for a couple hours. All about the city of Paris and/or relationships, or falling in love with the city itself. Loads of good actors. I really enjoyed this one. Conceptually, it reminded me a lot of Jim Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes, except I didn't fall asleep during it. Great eye candy if you're a fan of the city as well.
The second film we saw was Ratatouille, which also takes place in Paris. It then occurred to us that there are a ton of movies that take place in Paris out right now. Like, four of them? I find that odd. It didn't help that we left the theater and ended up in a bar that was showing Amelie. Anyway, paranoia aside, this cartoon was mostly enjoyable. Pixar films are usually fun to see, but it seems like they're cranking them out so fast these days that either the novelty is wearing off or they're spreading themselves thin. Worth seeing, but catch a matinee or Netflix it.
Cooking
Got some great new books, including two new cookbooks. First up is Vegan with a Vengeance. Tonight I used it to make dinner, following the recipe for Jerk Seitan and Coconut Rice (added black beans as a side). Holy crap. Soooo amazing and highly recommended. I also picked up Hot Damn and Hell Yeah / The Dirty South Cookbook. This one should be fun for things like Country Fried Seitan and recipes that are generally probably not so good for you, but fun to make every once in a while. It's got a glorified zine kinda feel, but hey it's only six bucks!
Pix
Probably my favorite thing about the iPhone is the 2 megapixel camera. I can press two buttons and the photo is instantly in the body of an e-mail addressed to my Flickr account. Pretty rad, I must say. I have been using it a ton and it takes some pretty great photos, as you can see from the first five pages of my photostream.
