February can be pretty good sometimes, right?
February 26, 2008
My, my, what weird weather we've been having. Friends of mine tell me this happens every year; we get a little taste of spring in the middle of winter. I seem to have blocked that out, so it was a nice surprise. A whole week in the 50's? I'll take it! This kid needs some sunshine.
In response to this fine weather, we dusted off the bikes and headed out for a bike ride last Saturday around the perimeter of West Seattle. Leisurely and fun, not to mention totally gorgeous. It's been a couple of months (maybe more?) since I've ridden, and it felt great. When I see cyclists riding this time of year, I kick myself for being such a wuss. Screw it, they're pretty much crazy.
Part of the problem is I'm not fully geared up for inclement weather. I can improvise, but something tells me riding in the rain, at night, in my only water proof shell (which is black) is a recipe for disaster. I think I'd be better off sitting at home sticking a fork in a socket just to see what happens. But lo and behold, my girl up and buys me a set of fenders for my bike, so I'm almost there.
I put the fenders on Sunday. It sucked towards the end; I hate things that are adjustable. Just couldn't seem to get em right. I'll swing by the local shop and make sure they're dialed in and ready to go as soon as I get a chance. I rode into work today and had to constantly stop and fiddle with them so they weren't rubbing my tires. That's obviously not how they should fit, I'm just an idiot when it comes to that stuff. The ride home was a bit long because I was either adjusting my front fender or keeping my headlight from moving about every 6 blocks. So I'm almost ready for winter riding from the ass down, now I just need to worry about the upper half.
Speaking of fenders, the day I can get my hands on a Long Haul Trucker, I'm getting either Fast Boys or Full Woods. Gorgeous. Olive, please. My current ride is a great first bike—a bit gaudy, sure—but mainly it's not designed to be practical. It's a wanna-be race bike. Woops.
