Back In the Saddle Again
May 06, 2008
Whew. Lots to catch up on.
Record Store Day: we came, we saw, we plundered. I forget the exact date, but it was about two weeks ago. A day to celebrate independent record stores. And celebrate we did! Snagged a bunch of 99 cent titles from Jive Time, splurged on some goodies at Easy Street and scored three sampler LPs for free, and finished off the day going to Singles for the first time in AGES. Their records are surprisingly spendy. Such is life in Beltown, I guess. Here's what I got:
- Los Hispanos Quartet - Fiesta de la Americas (so fun!)
- Minus the Bear - Menos el Oso
- Elvis Costello - This Year's Model
- The Very Best of Loretta and Conway
- Hazme el Milagro - Juan Salazar
- Regulations s/t
- Jets to Brazil - Orange Rhyming Dictionary (1st pressing!)
- The Cure - Standing on a Beach
- Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms (99 cents, why not?)
- The Clash - Give Em Enough Rope
- The Breeders - Pod
- Sugar - File Under Easy Listening
- Ritchie Valens - His Greatest Hits
- Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass - Whipped Cream and Other Delights
- Dinosaur Jr - Green Mind
- Michael Jackson - Thriller
Saw those San Diego kids in the Night Marchers last week. Mr. Reis can do no wrong my friends! What a fun time that was. Plus, 3/4 of the Hot Snakes, and for some odd reason, I never saw them live, so that was rad. And man, openers the Muslims? Get into that shit!
What else...oh yeah, been riding my bicycle like a madman, and it feels so good. I think I started riding to work around the end of March or beginning of April. Like one day a week, weather permitting. Now that May is in full swing, I'm going to ride to work every damn day this month. Getting back in the saddle was surprisingly easy. Making that Wall St. climb from the waterfront to 1st Ave. is about as difficult as blinking, and it took me a while to work up to tackling that last spring.
I've been consistently riding home these days, which involves going from sea level to 520 feet in elevation to get to my place. I've been doing that without stopping (getting off and walking) which feels pretty good. Not pretty good as in "gee, this is fun!" but more like, "holy crap, I can't believe I made it up that hill". So yeah, that rules. Nothing like rolling out of bed in the morning, throwing on some gear, and bombing down those hills to get the day started. May is also great because it's Bike to Work month, so lots of people are out joining in the fun. I've been given smiles and fist pumps of solidarity. Plus, how often do you pull up to a stop light in a car and chat with the person next to you? Never.
