Testing the Trails
August 04, 2008
Summer is great, isn't it? At least it is up here, when it stays well below 90. Weddings, babies, bachelors, all kinds of excitement. Spent the majority of the day taking it all in, and riding our bikes all over the damn place. It was a relatively flat, leisurely 26 miles, taking off in West Seattle and heading to Leschi, through Montlake, and looping around via Fremont and Ballard back into Downtown. The route:
We rode out to Leschi to catch the Blue Angels show first; up Dearborn to try and find the beginning of the I-90 trail. I found signs along the way, but they weren't very helpful. They at least let me know that I was close, which enabled us to spot it. I clearly don't ride over to this part of town frequently enough. That trail led us down to Lakeside Drive, which we cruised along until I found the spot where I watched the show last year (or was it the year before that?). Got some tasty beverages from the Leschi Market, ate our packed lunch, and enjoyed the show. Ran into John, even; ridiculous!
After that we meandered our way away out of Madrona, which was also not well marked in crucial spots. I know how to drive out of there, but that's typically not the most enjoyable route for cycling. We followed some hipster that zipped past us and managed to get to where we wanted to be.
Kim showed me around the UW campus, which was gorgeous. I'd only seen a portion of it briefly years ago. I'll get pix up soon on Flickr. From there we took the Burke all the way through Fremont along the canal, and busted left at Ballard. Jogged up Emerson to get over to Gilman and join up with that Interbay trail. I love that stretch.
That ran us into Myrtle Edwards along the Elliott Bay trail, which is probably one of the most beautiful spots in the city. Took that down Alaskan to try and catch a Water Taxi, but for some reason they stopped running early. I've still yet to ride that thing. Managed to catch a bus along 1st that saved us from the nightmare-ish hills we live on. About 6 hours total, then, out for dinner and drinks with friends. That's what I like to call "rounding out a weekend".
