Testing the Trails
August 04, 2008
Summer is great, isn't it? At least it is up here, when it stays well below 90. Weddings, babies, bachelors, all kinds of excitement. Spent the majority of the day taking it all in, and riding our bikes all over the damn place. It was a relatively flat, leisurely 26 miles, taking off in West Seattle and heading to Leschi, through Montlake, and looping around via Fremont and Ballard back into Downtown. The route:

I am completely obsessed with riding my bike. And anything bike related. I'll spend hours looking at baskets and gizmos to affix to my ride. Bags, top tube covers, saddles, whatever. What's the temperature outside and how long will it take to warm up enough to avoid wearing a jacket? If you've ever been to a hardware store with me, you know how mesmerized I can get. Bike shops are the new hardware store. I just want to look at it.

I've been interested in getting my messenger bag off my back during my commute. I know, I know, it kind of defeats the purpose a bit. But having a swampy back at the end of a ride isn't the most pleasant experience, especially if you're trying to make a short trip in regular clothing. I needed a rack, for sure, but wasn't too keen on spending $80 on a pannier when my current, waterproof bag suits me just fine.

I have a new love in my life. She has olive green skin and prefers a simpler, less flashy look. She likes to climb a lot more than the red head that I used to run around town with. She's a little heavier, but a lot more down to earth. I plan to treat her right and adorn her with lots of nice things.

No time to put in my two cents on this, but to sum it up, I think it's all pretty ludicrous. There have been a lot of articles in the news recently about the scarcity of corn and rice and the sources for the pinch. In short: biofuels and livestock.

Last night, dessert was in order, so I went into the kitchen to grab some recently purchased Mighty-O minis and soymilk. I had to laugh when I opened up the fridge to get the milk and feasted my eyes on this:

I love random nights when things fall into place and a good time is had by all. I was fortunate enough to have that happen last night when I went to see Helvetica, the movie.

I've got record fever, the vinyl kind. Wax. I've always picked up records here and there and have a decent stack, but recently it all sunk in. A buddy of mine has been snatching them up left and right. Then, I went to my friend's place at Snoqualmie Pass a couple weekends ago.

My, my, what weird weather we've been having. Friends of mine tell me this happens every year; we get a little taste of spring in the middle of winter. I seem to have blocked that out, so it was a nice surprise. A whole week in the 50's? I'll take it! This kid needs some sunshine.

We took a couple of videos with our digital camera during our last trip to Costa Rica. They're not the greatest, but they're fun.

Another trip to Costa Rica under the belt. This time we traveled with friends (in a planned sorta way) and with the exception of travel days, stayed in one spot. It was great to stay at the Gilded Iguana, a place where we met our friends Keith and Jill on the first trip. We even ended up in the same room that they had, how bizarre! Only $35 a night, how can you top that? The owner enjoyed having us so much that she even gave us a free night.

It's odd visiting a country so far away from home where everyone speaks the same language. The differences one encounters throughout the day are very subtle. I guess every major metropolitan area throughout the world suffers from some form of homogenization. Walking down the street in London on the first day was like this. There's an Irish pub, there's a supermarket, there's a bank, etc. Once you jump in and immerse yourself, you'll start to notice the little things.

Tomorrow we begin a European vacation; I can't wait. We'll start in London, then to Manchester, the Lake District, and wrap up everything in Amsterdam. I've never been to any of these cities, and my head is swimming with all of the stuff we'll get to do and see.

Oh yeah, San Francisco. Been there a few times over the past month. Good peeps, great food, kick ass city. I can't say that I can find too much to complain about traveling on the company dime. The occasional awkward dinner alone at a restaurant, but that's about it. I've been to that city more times than I can count, and every time I'm introduced to a neighborhood or area that's completely new to me.

So, yeah, comments are gone for now. You know how you get spam in your inbox? Well when you have a site with comments enabled, guess what? Your comments get spammed. And if you have the common sense to moderate your comments so the rest of the world doesn't have to see that crap, that means you get an e-mail every time some god-spam idiot decides to leave a comment. I started doing some workarounds, but it just didn't seem worth it. Kim, Rick, and Maggie will have to e-mail me directly if they wish to chime in on a post.

What a strange weekend. The weather totally flipped a switch that made everything feel like we time warped to Fall, except the temps hovered around 70. Good for the plants I suppose, and therefore good for my water bill. But as Chris said, we don't sit through 9 months of crappy weather for this.

This time of the year drives me crazy. There's just enough warm weather and sunshine to keep me hooked, and then, boom. Gone. 58 degrees today? What kind of horse shit is this? That's right, the stinky kind.

I bought a bike today! It's a 2007 Specialized Allez Triple, and it's red and black. I went to three different shops, researched several different manufacturers, and test road three different bikes. I think I did a pretty damn good job if I do say so myself. I was really happy with the price as well, and spent less than I thought I'd have to for a brand new, decent road bike. Which is good, because I needed one of everything. As I've said before, one purchase leads to several more, so naturally I had to get a helmet, and a lock, and a pump, and a light, oh, and a tube and patch kit in case I get a flat. Oh, and something to put that in. This is the first bike that I've bought in about 12 years. I think the last one was a Huffy mountain bike from Sports Authority or something awful like that. Behold:

So, I went to Tennessee two weeks ago to visit some of my in-laws. And obviously, I'm a bad, bad, blog person for allowing a whole month to pass betwixt posts. But, I did just start a new job, and that definitely had an impact. Let's just say the “lunch breaks” aren't quite as lengthy as my previous experience.

And the winner—for the worst airport in history—goes toooooo...San Jose International!
As I sit here weary, irritated that I just had to leave the confines of Terminal A to walk down the street and go back through security to Terminal C, I notice that my flight is delayed for the second time today. Awesome. Normally when I’m confronted with a situation like this, I’ll just head over to one of those really expensive airport bars and have a couple of beers to kill the time. Oh but wait, there is no bar in this terminal. Besides that, I’m really not feeling that great. Probably due to the fact that I’ve been out every night since Friday trying to catch all of the South-by after parties. Everyone around me is sneezing.
